Nick Watney Puts on Putting Clinic to Win WGC Cadillac
I was starting to think Nick Watney was too nice to win a big event on the PGA Tour. But, he proved me wrong by outlasting the tours finest young talent including Dustin Johnson and Hunter Mahan. The day started out looking like Dustin had the edge birdying the first hole and bombing big drives on every other hole.
After that first birdie DJ, played par golf for pretty much the rest of the event. Hunter Mahan looked to be in good shape early but he just couldn’t deliver later in the round he played the last 10 holes at 5 over, a stretch that included a double on a par 3. Sorry to say it was another tough finish for Hunter.
Butch Harmon had an all around good day, both Watney and Johnson are currently under the tutelage of the legendary coach.
On Saturday Watney got bit by the Blue Monster at Doral when he doubled the 468 yard par 4 18th. Sunday was a much different story, Watney very much tamed the monster by dropping 7 birdies on the field against 2 bogies. Nick Watney stood on the long par 4 18th knowing what had happened the day earlier and he didn’t flinch.
Watney was 1 up going into 18 and with the memory of Saturday’s double long gone hit a nice drive followed by a decent iron to about 15 feet. Watney’s putting heroics had been on display all day and the 18th was no different, he drained the 15 footer for bird and a two shot lead. More than clutch knowing DJ has the ability to cut the corner and take it over the water on 18, which he did, but it was all for not due to the long birdie putt by Watney.
Nick Watney is earning the name Mr. Consistency, he has now finished in the Top 10 in his last 10 tour events going back to last year.
It’s great to see good things come to such a nice kid. If you remember at the PGA last year Watney was playing with Johnson in the final group when the infamous “bunkergate” incident occured at Whistling Straights. I will never forget the look on Watney’s face when the Rules Official walked up and told Johnson there was an issue with the bunker shot. Watney was far more bewildered than DJ was, good things do come to good people. Nice job Nick.
