Longest Golf Ball 2012

The Longest Golf Ball Available for 2012

Nike Golf introduced its new 20XI premium golf ball in April of last year, featuring golf ball technology the company claims has never before seen in the golf industry – the result of four years of collaborative research and development between Nike Golf’s engineers and a team of material experts at DuPont. The result of that engineering? The Longest Golf Ball Available to You in 2012.

The Best Ball in Golf

Longest Ball on Tour The biggest technology change with the 2012 version of the 20XI comes from replacing the conventional rubber core with a new resin material. Resin is a highly neutralized polymer that’s faster and lighter material engineered to produce longer distance and more control.

The weight of the special core has been reduced by using this polymer, which allows for additional weight to the specially designed cover of the ball.

This added exterior weight will cause less rotation or spin at it’s peek spin rate but allow for a more prolonged spin. The additional “length of spin” will allow for more carry.
This concept of “perimeter weighting” a golf ball will allow for more spin on shorter shots and less spin off the driver. Spin off the driver is what causes the ball to balloon and lose distance.
Ball Speed Adds Distance

Longest Golf Ball 2012Nike also says, through internal testing with its tour players, an average of 2-3 mph increase in ball speed has been seen with the new ball. This could theoretically translate up to an added nine yards of carry distance.

With each MPH of speed you add an extra 3 +/- yards.

Nike will launch two versions of the new golf ball in 2012 – the 20XI-X (tour-level distance) and 20XI-S (tour-level spin). The 20XI-X is optimized to reduce excess driver spin to maximize distance. The 20XI-S incorporates a softer cover for enhanced greenside spin and control.

With these technology advances, the new 20xi balls promise to be the longest golf ball in 2011. Nike claims that the overall feel of the golf ball has been improved by using an extra soft and slightly heavier cover.

Longest Ball AvailableUpdate: I’ve been using the Nike 20Xi-X since April 30th. There is absolutely no doubt that it is the absolute best ball in golf right now. I had switched to ProV1-x for about 6 months from Nike One.

  1. Do you know if tour players are using this ball yet? The price seems to be pretty high. I’m curious if people are getting the results Nike claims?

    • Golf Newz says:

      Hi James,

From what I hear they are. I can’t wait to get my hands on a sleeve. I played Nike Golf Balls for 11 years and I finally switched to Pro V1X late last year. But I think this ball will be a better option, we’ll see!

  2. I saw several pros using the 20XI ball this season. I am not sure if distance alone is the goal for using this ball. It seems that distance is good, but spin under different conditions is the factor drawing golfers to this ball.

      Hey Denny,

Spin is definitely the draw to this ball…specifically less rpm and more rotation later in the flight. But, a natural result of this is more distance combined with more zip when the ball hits the green from an iron shot. Off the driver, the company makes claims that the lower high end spin/longer spinning will result in better drives in windier conditions, this is definitely true.

For the average player, distance is of paramount importance, most don’t care about the ball being more likely to jump, even when it otherwise shouldn’t.

I first used the 20xi-x and it was a bit jumpy and hard to control as it seemed to fly a bit, I switched to the Reg 20xi and no longer have the jumping issue. If you’re seeking distance and you have a high swing speed, 20xi-x is the way to go.

      Thanks for the input, Denny.

  3. I think that the Ti Tech golfballs are the best balls ever to be made

    • Hi Jake, I have never heard of Ti Tech balls? I’ll take a peek though! Thanks for the feedback. BTW, I didn’t approve your last comment because I don’t see how it added any value at all to readers? Maybe you could expand on your thought and add to the conversation.

  4. Can’t wait to try this ball. I currently use pro v1x which gives me good distance. I hope this ball has good spin and control around the greens. If it has then it will be a successful ball. I wonder how many dimples this ball has? surely must be low to generate more distance. It’s a bold claim to say they are the best balls ever to be made. We shall soon see!

  5. hey Golf Newz,
Just because Jake isn’t trying to promote your golf ball, doesn’t mean he’s wrong to post here. I also have played Ti Tech in the past and I liked their golf balls. One more thing for Hamp…. price of a golf ball doesn’t mean they are of lesser quality.

    • Golf Newz says:

      Hey Ray N,

I have nothing at all against Jake or his Ti Tech balls. (There was mention of not approving a comment) It had nothing to do with golf, the comment was just a string of swears. It made no sense. But, thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts!
